A new Version 3.28.1913 of the free CCleaner system cleaning utility has been released. This version improves Windows 8 compatibility, improves cleaning for Windows Log Files and Flash Player, and has a range of minor improvements and bug fixes.
Mozilla has released Version 19.0 of the Firefox browser. The most significant changes are the enabling of a built-in PDF viewer which allows fast viewing of PDF files within the browser using HTML5, as well as startup performance improvements.
Futuremark has released a new version of the 3DMark graphical benchmark. It contains DirectX 9, 10 and 11-based benchmarks, and requires Windows Vista, 7 or 8 to run. There is a free Basic Edition of 3DMark available.
Microsoft has announced that Halo 2 will be the first game to allow cross-platform play when it is released for the PC later in the year. PC gamers will be able to play against those who already have the game on Xbox via the consoles online Live service.
The success of Xbox Live and Microsoft's commitment to "Games for Windows" is the spur for the move which will see Xbox Live combining with Games for Windows Live, a similar service to the already popular Xbox gaming service. Similar to the Xbox Live service the Games for Windows Live will have two account levels; a free Silver version, and a Gold version which will allow players the cross-platform compatibility and other features for a $49.95 per year subscription fee.
